The author, Alan Cooper, is Manchester born and bred, and moved to Dorset in the late 1990s. Apart from the benefit of not having his house being broken into by burglars, he still misses the Saddleworth moors, where he spent many happy days bogtrotting over them with his other other faithful animal companion, a dog called Champ. He lives alone but still shares his house with animals, now mainly woodlice and moths.
